NEWS– It’s here!  Well not quite here.  But, it’s coming!  Even though we don’t quite know when.  Canon officially announced the long-awaited predecessor to it’s EOS R, the EOS R5, last night.  Canon had taken a lot of heat and probably some market share loss to Sony with it’s slow movement into the mirrorless space.  The EOS R, released in 2018, was a step in the right direction, but it felt like Canon was just dipping their toes in the deep end of mirrorless and the professionals were certainly not lining up at the door to trade in their DSLRs for the R.

We didn’t get a lot of details from the development announcement and what we did get was fairly general.  Here’s what Canon did share:

  • 12 Frames per second with the mechanical shutter
  • 20 Frames per second using the electronic shutter
  • 8k video recording
  • In body image stabilization (IBIS) – the first Canon ever to have this
  • New image sensor

Canon didn’t specify how many megapixels the new sensor would be, though we’ve seen rumors that it will be 45MP.  We didn’t get a launch date, though the rumor mill pegs this around July 2020.  We also didn’t get a price and with the specs it’s kind of hard to speculate where that will be given that we’re seeing pro-level specs from this announcement.   At $5,000 (USD), I think it will be over priced, and $3,000 is too low.  It’s probably safe to say it will be in that super unspecific range.

Canon also announced that they will be developing 9 lens of the RF mount in 2020.  Most of the mainstream, high-end lens have already been released for RF so I’m not sure we’ll see anything mind-blowing here– perhaps some lower speed lens in the F/4 and F/5 range.
